The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Garki Branch, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has vowed to take legal action against “the illegal harvest and trade of kidneys in the territory and its environs.”
This is coming in response to the recent report of illegal harvesting of organs in the FCT and Nasarawa State.
The Chairman of the branch, Obioma Ezenwobodo, noted that the branch had directed its Health and Medical Committee to keep tabs on the pending legal actions instituted by affected parties in the matter and to ensure that justice is served.
He said the association had taken pro bono legal representation for victims, adding that the branch also enjoined relevant government agencies and professional bodies to work assiduously to nip the ugly trend in the bud by sanitizing and adopting a strict regulatory regime for organ transplants.
It described the illegal harvesting and trade of kidneys as shady, cruel, inhuman and offensive to Section 54 of the National Health Act that proscribes sale or trade in human organs.
