The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched a bold initiative to eradicate malaria in the state, introducing digital tracking tools and expanded healthcare access to combat the disease.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu emphasised that malaria is more than a health issue, saying it is a major socio-economic burden that affects productivity, drains household incomes, and disrupts education.
“The eradication of malaria is not just good health news; it is an economic imperative. It affects schoolchildren, businesses, and overall productivity. We must put a stop to this,” the governor declared.
The initiative introduces real-time digital tracking of malaria cases, minimizing the need for extensive blood testing and enabling faster diagnosis.
It also emphasises strengthened private-sector partnerships to expand access to quality healthcare, ensuring that treatment reaches more people efficiently.
Additionally, the programme calls for collective action from government agencies, healthcare providers, and community leaders to drive awareness and implementation at all levels.
To ensure accountability, the initiative includes regular progress tracking, with a clear goal of achieving malaria eradication in Lagos by 2025.
Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for urgency and accountability, urging stakeholders to double their efforts in fighting malaria.
He also announced the promotion of the Executive Secretary, Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), Dr. Abiola Idowu to Permanent Secretary of the same agency, recognizing the importance of strong leadership in the health sector.
“We have everything we need to eliminate malaria in Lagos. This is not just an attempt we must deliver results,” he asserted.
