The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman has expressed concern at the growing number of out-of-school children in the country, especially in the Northern region. He declared that addressing this issue
The Minister voiced these concerns during the the 2023 Bauchi Education Summit, held in Bauchi with the theme “Improving Access and Quality of Education in Bauchi State.”
Highlighting the urgent need to reverse the concerning trend of increasing out-of-school children, Prof. Mamman called for joint efforts of all stakeholders, stressing the crucial link between the success of education and the prosperity of the nation at large..
He expressed optimism about the newly established National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, aiming to enhance collaboration to address the issue and provide Tsangaya schools with the necessary recognition and status they deserve. Dr. Sununu also emphasized the importance of integrating Tsangaya/Madarasa schools into basic education and urged for collaboration from Ulamas and school proprietors.
Furthermore, the Minister lauded the proactive steps of the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in improving the education sector, such as teacher training, hiring additional teachers, and infrastructure development. He encouraged participants at the summit to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the state government and devise practical, locally accepted, and cost-effective solutions to address the existing educational challenges in the state.
Governor Bala Mohammed, in his address, highlighted his administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the state by increasing the budgetary allocation to education. He announced a progressive increase to approximately 16% of the total budget for education in the fiscal year 2023, reflecting their strong belief in the pivotal role of a well-funded education sector in the state’s overall development.
