15 Killed in Fresh Benue Community Attacks by Suspected Armed Herders

At least 15 people have been killed in fresh attacks by suspected armed herders on multiple communities in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attackers reportedly stormed the Utange council ward on Friday before moving to Kpav, specifically Dikpo and Imande Gberihwa, on Saturday night, unleashing terror on residents.

By Sunday, several people were reported missing, while many others fled the troubled communities.

It was gathered the killings began on Friday when the assailants invaded Utange council ward, leaving multiple casualties.

However, on Saturday night, they advanced to Kpav, setting homes ablaze and destroying food supplies.

In a statement on Sunday, Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, condemned the attacks and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.

“The governor expresses his profound condolences to the families of the casualties and the entire community of Kpav, particularly Dikpo and Imande Gberihwa, following the vicious attack by marauding armed herdsmen,” it said.

Governor Alia described the killings and destruction as a painful reminder of the security challenges facing his administration, stressing that such brutality would not be tolerated.

The statement read, “We are striving intently with local law enforcement and community leaders to ensure that our villagers can reside in peace without fear of terrorism.

“To the people of Benue State, we want to encourage you that your security is our top priority. We recognise the anxiety and fear that such incidents can produce, but we are committed to strengthening peace and security in our communities.

“Collectively, we will rise above this challenge and strengthen our willpower to protect our homes and loved ones.

“We appeal to everybody to remain wary and report any doubtful activity to the authorities. It is only through our concerted efforts that we can achieve longstanding peace.”

He assured residents that security forces had been deployed to the affected areas and vowed to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent further violence.
